  • School bus safety reminder

School buses will be on the road again starting August 28, 2023, and this means congestion around our schools. It is very important for drivers to slow down and pay attention in and around school zones.

As motorists, we must drive with extra care when approaching a school bus. When a school bus has stopped and its red lights are flashing, vehicle traffic from both directions must come to a complete stop.

The overhead red lights flashing on a school bus means only one thing – the bus is loading or unloading children. Do not proceed until the lights are turned off, as there may still be children coming or attempting to cross the street.

Passing the school bus when children are embarking/disembarking the bus is dangerous, illegal, and can have deadly consequences. The fine for violations starts at $567 plus 6 demerit points.

Parents/guardians, please remind your children to be extra careful when getting on or off the school bus. Teach them to always obey the driver’s directions, and to watch out for traffic approaching the bus from either direction before crossing the road.
